Porn Times

Sex Sells. If so, the Times of India must have seen its circulation soar in the past two days. For those who hadn't seen the MMS of Preity Zinta's look alike bathing or Mallika Sherawat's twin (?) making out with a guy, The Times of India has taken care of that particular shortfall. For the past couple of days Delhi Times has been doing stories on the MMS of various film stars or their look alikes in various states of undress and sexual gratification. Exposes are fine, but why is Delhi Times carrying explicit pictures which leave nothing to the imagination. And I mean nothing. Yesterday it was Preity Zinta, today it is Mallika Sherawat. Who is it going to be tomorrow? Riya Sen?The Times group is using sex to sell its paper and, worse, pretending to do so in the guise of serious journalism. Does it really have such a poor opinion of its readers that it thinks they won't see through the ruse? I detest such journalism where the only thing that matters is how much you sell, and not what you sell. But for those who like porn, access to it just got cheaper. For Rs 2, you can now settle down to your daily fix of porn brought to you by India's largest selling daily, The Times of India. And for those who like news, well, you poor sods had better get used to seeing porn first thing in the morning. Or switch to the Indian Express.

Honestly, TOI should stop calling themselves a newspaper! Our local paper guys tells us that some people have requested him to deliver the paper without the Delhi Times supplement. I guess that's one way of dealing with the problem.

Well porn and celebrity gossip also comprise news though it may not be what everyone is looking for. I agree with you in that the glamour pitch is a very well-thought out marketing strategy. The young, they say, like their newspaper spiced up and TOI being a business venture may be catering to a particular audience. At this point I must say I have switched loyalties to Indian Express online for my daily quota of desi news but when I seek entertainment I head straight for timesofindia.com. The leading news paper has some social responsibiltiy and TOI seems to have deleted the word responsibility from its vocabulory.
I have now posted my first blog comment. yeah!!!!

Ummm, TOI bashing is the thing that brings every media watcher together! I believe there are a number of websites/blogs for this very purpose. And early this yr, TOI actually filed a case against a blogger and shut down his media watch blog (http://mediaah.blogspot.com).
Insensitivity, irresponsibility, name it and TOI is guilty. And I don't know if you noticed, but sometime ago, TOI just did a CTRL-C + CTRL-V from a spoof on Aishwarya Rai (after removing the byline) and posted it like "real news".

Concur with all statements re:porn and TOI. Somebody should write a thesis on the kind of trash journalism they specialise in... but maybe these comments could just as well be copy-pasted and made into a thesis - TOI ishtyle. You do have to hand it to them that they have no more pretenses about what they're selling... as long as it sells!
On another note, I have to admit, I check out their site for the latest on desi gossip and really, really *bad* lists like Top 10 Actresses Who Live in a Big House kind of crap. But that's coz there are lazy ass journos who write for other bored, lazy ass journos like me :) kidding.

Wondering, since when did you begin considering Delhi Times an e.g. of serious journalism!
During my interview at IIMC, a member of the panel, who later turned out to be my course coordinator, had asked me to explain the concept of Yellow Journalism. Apparently, what ToI, in the garb of Delhi Times, is practising today is neither new nor exclusive. It’s just that the media company happens to be more successful (at least financially, else it would not have afforded to continue the practice for that long), and for that reason attracts more public attention, than what a few others of the same genre might be trying to achieve.

One more instance of TOI's stupidity

Seems like TOI and its sister publications are really challenged when it comes to research! Look at the picture! They obvsly thought Britney Spears's first hubby was THE Jason "George Costanza" Alexander! God....

Rajesh,
Delhi Times is undoubtedly a tabloid, it does not pretend and cannot be mistaken for anything else. The point is that it is part of a larger group, which is India's largest selling daily, and therefore has a social responsibility to not publish sexually explicit pictures.
